Summerfest Today

Hi:

What a strange way to keep your beer cool. I wonder if it is on rinse or spin cycle.

Today is Summer Fest in Stayton. I am heading out to see it as soon as I finish this post.

I started and finished The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner in one day. No chapters in this book, just one long story. Now I will have to go back to the end of Eclipse, the third book in the Twilight series.

I finished the book in one day, reading it all yesterday.

I went to the library today to pick up six books there. I will chose one to begin reading today.

It is cool out today.

Weekend nears again...

Good morning:

I finished Colossus. It is a very good history of the 1920's. Men working on the dam earned only $5.00 a day, with no overtime, even though they were suppose to pay overtime. The contractor was called The Six Companies, as it was six different companies joining together to build this dam.

Now I am reading The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, a short novel by Stephenie Meyer. She wrote the Twilight series, which I read last year. This novel is very short, only 178 pages.

My dad is bringing me some prunes. I ordered some prunes but they are not here yet. I plan on drying most of them this year. I still have at least 10 quarts of canned prunes left over from last year. This year I am drying at least 40 pounds of prunes.

I ordered a new Kindle two days ago. It is new Kindle 3, the one that costs $139.00. It has just WiFi links, not the WhisperNet that my Kindle 1 has. The new Kindle 3 will link only to hot spots where a WiFi signal is there. With my Kindle 1 I can link and download books anywhere I go. I did it only once, with my Dad's Kindle 1. He wanted on of President Obama books and could not find them at the library.

I was in the car with him, driving to my brother's house in Wilsonville. I got online with his Kindle and found the book for he wanted for $4.00. I bought it and added to his Kindle. (It was added to my Kindle too as we are linked on my account.

My Amazon Kindle page now shows I have 3 Kindles on my management page. I downloaded a few books from my archives (books I got previously from Amazon) to my Kindle 3.

Tomorrow Stayton has its annual festival, Summer Fest. I plan on going to the Firemen's Breakfast then touring the booths set out on 3rd Street.

Mid-week, or hump day, as we call it...

Hello:

Remember this iconic picture? It appeared on National Geographic in 1986. I found this magazine at a garage sale two years ago.

The photographer of this photo got the last roll of Kodachrome film that Kodak made. He is taking pictures with it now. I assume most of those pictures will show up in a few months in National Geographic.

Not much happening here. I am 10 pages from the end of Sanctification. I will finish it all by tomorrow.

I must finish Colossus by Saturday. I am more than half way through it. I love reading history like this book. Even in the summer I enjoy reading nonfiction more than fiction. I figure I read five nonfiction books for every novel I read.

Good morning:

This asteroid is lurking near us. It was formed when our solar system was formed.

I am still reading Colossus. Prohibition is going on when the thought of this dam came into being. It is still in effect up the bid time. It is interesting to see another book that comments on how much liquor leaked during the Prohibition. There was a still in Boulder City, the town that grew up with the building of Hoover Dam, called initially Boulder Dam.

Picked all of my peas this morning and put them in a slow boiler that has cream of mushroom soup and chicken. It is cooking now and will be ready by dinner time.

I have been in touch with my first cousin, once removed, Vince Schwindt. He is doing research on the Schwindt family. I answered a bunch of questions he had for me. I was not interest in genealogy until I got messages from Schwindt family members in Argentina.

I now have over 20 friends on Facebook that are from Argentina, all with last name of Schwindt.

My tomatoes are coming on strong. I have about 20 tomatoes now changing color. I will buying bacon in bulk soon. What I love about home-grown tomatoes is the taste of them, especially on bacon and tomato sandwiches. I skip the lettuce, although I do have red lettuce growing in my garden so I may vary pattern and put that on my sandwiches.

I have one tomato growing upside down. It has blooms on it now. I hope it gets tomatoes soon too. It is an Early Girl. My other tomatoes are Willamette. In the future I will buy tomatoes only with Oregon names.

Weekend is ending....

Hello again:

This panda was in Washington D.C., having been born there. But China wanted him back so the officials in D.C. had to give him back. This picture shows him in China now.

I made strawberry/rhubarb crisp. The mixture had too much fluid from the berries so the crisp did not sit on the top like it does when I make an apple crisp. It is very good nevertheless.

I finished Fever Dream. It left at least two big questions unanswered. I see the authors posted a note at the end of this book telling us about the new series they are writing now, with the first book in that series coming out in the winter of 2011. But they go on to say they will still be writing about Agent Pedergrast in future books. They better. The two big questions are very big and the book ended without resolving either one. I will not tell you in case you decide to read this book. If you do then you will have the two same questions I have after reading this book.

I am back to Colossus: Hoover Dam and the Making of the American Century. It is a good history of the first big dam built in the States. It will take me a few days to get through this book, but this is the kind of "biography" I discovered I like to read. It tells me a lot about the early 20th century.

By tomorrow I will have typed 60 pages of the 92 page Sanctification. It is the longest of the three epic poems the late Raymond Geraths wrote. The other two are Creation and Redemption. Both of these two latter poems were only 40 or pages long.

I expect to be finished with Sanctification by early August.

I am expecting a third picking of rhubarb in my two plants I borrowed a year ago.

I am listening to channel 803 on my TV, the 60's Revolution. Music from my time. I like this kind of music. No talking at all; just music all of the time.

Warm today

Hi again:

It is very warm today. My clothes I hung outside at noon are dry already.

I biked to the Berry Festival. I tasted some great berry jams there, including blackberry and peach jam. I got five ears of corn there. I was on my bike so I could not get much.

This picture shows a 40 ton whale hitting a sailboat. The boat did not sink, but the superstructure was severely damaged, as shown by other pictures I found of it.

I have two books waiting for me at the library but no need to get them soon. I have until August 3 to pick up these two books. I have too many books to read here so I will not get them until later next week.

Not much on TV these days, which gives me time to read my books.

The weekend is here...

Hello:

This picture shows my second crop of rhubarb. I fertilized it about a month ago and it came back. I love rhubarb. I will pick it tomorrow and cook the stuff up.

I am reading Fever Dream by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. I read everything these two novelists write together. I don't like to read Child's separate books but I do read Preston's books. This is an excellent novel. I will finish it in the next few days.

I watched Three Days of the Condor the other day on TV. Now I am going to re-read Six Days of the Condor. The movie cut down the number of days but I want to re-read this novel.

Tomorrow there is a Berry Festival at a farm store near here. I will ride my bike to it. This will be fun. But earlier in the morning it is garage sale day too.

Hump Day again

Hello:

One raspberry plant into many raspberry plants this year. They show in this picture. We planted just one raspberry plant last summer and now this summer we have about 20 plants coming up. I know you prune the plant each year by cutting off the completely the fruit-bearing cane. So I will dig out a bigger area for next year's plants.

I am heading to the library soon. I have a good novel waiting for me there.

It was so cold this morning when I went to Safeway on my bike. I was wearing just a T-shirt and short pants. Downright cold on that trip.

As you know I don't eat cheese. I am listening to Stuff You Should Know podcast on how we taste. One of the hosts said his jaw locks up when eating a piece of sharp cheddar cheese. Does this ever happen to you? Again, I hate cheese so I can never test this myself.

Hi again:

This picture shows my two tomatoes in the ground. You see some small green tomatoes on it together with many blossoms. This variety is Willamette. I got these as small 79 cent plants from Wilco.

I have one tomato growing upside down. It is an Early Girl variety and it has a series of blooms on it. I want to see how the tomatoes hang on it when it upside down.

I have a second picking of rhubarb now. I fertilized it about a month ago, now both plants have some leaves I can cut off and cook up.

I want to get 40 pounds of prunes, as I told you the other day. I want to dry those 40 pounds of prunes.

I continue to read Colossus about Hoover Dam. It was initially called Boulder Dam, but in 1947 Congress renamed it Hoover Dam.

I am waiting for Nolan to get Creation back to me. Unknown to him and all others I am typing up Sanctification, a 92 page poem. I am doing about six pages a day, so I will finish it during the first week in August. I work on the poem as soon as I get up in the morning. I want to get my quota done early in the day.

If you listen to All Things Considered today you can hear a long story on Catholics in China. Interesting story.

Have any of you gotten miles restored by Delta Airlines? We have over 51,000 miles accrued on that Delta card, but only 10,506 are eligible for redemption. I will contact Delta to try to get these miles back.

Yet another picture from our parade here.

I did finish Red Mars today. I will not read the other two books in this series. It took forever, it seems, for me to get this book finished.

Now I am reading Colossus: Hoover Dam and the Making of the American Century. Now the Colorado River trickles into the Pacific at its end. I can never imagine this happening in Oregon. We will never sell any water from the Columbia River to California.

I am listening to NPR now on my computer. There is a story about China and Christianity there. Tomorrow there will be a story on Catholics in China. I don't know if this will be on Morning Edition or All Things Considered in the afternoon. I am assuming it is on the afternoon show, ATC.

I am eating some of my canned peaches. I have over 10 quarts left over from last year. I will not can as many this year.

I want to get some marionberries yet this summer. I will get some prunes later to can and dry here. This year I plan to dry 40 pounds of prunes. Last summer I dried 10 pounds of prunes that did not last very long.

I will make sauerkraut later this summer. I don't eat this stuff, but others like it. It is so easy to make so I will make at least two batches of it.

No rain yesterday and none in the future now.

This picture here is a French viaduct, carrying water across the country there.

I was planning on reading today but I did no reading today. Red Mars is dragging and dragging. I will not read the two sequels to this book. I have a different book to read when I am finally finished with Red Mars.

I had some marionberry cobbler yesterday at the reunion. It was so good I took some home to eat today. Marionberries are my favorite fruit, even though they were developed at Oregon State, the cow college in Corn Valley. Looking up marionberries on the Internet and found it was made from two other blackberries, both Oregon hybrids.

I need to put the pictures from yesterday on my computer and send them off to Vince Schwindt for identification. He is my first cousin, once removed. His father is my first cousin. I will do this tomorrow as I am tired today.

The weekend continues...

Hello:

It is much cooler today; I sure hope it does not rain today.

The picture here is Argentina. The Schwindt family members are in Buenos Aires and White Bay, about 634 kilometers south of Buenos Aires. You don't see White Bay on this map. White Bay is where my grandparents setttled for about 10 years, starting in the late 1880's.

I had fun at the Schwindt reunion yesterday. Most there were decedents of Jospeph Schwindt, my uncle who died about two years ago at age 98.

I am watching 2012 this morning. Such a funny movie. What a great comedy.

The weekend nears

Hi again:

This picture is the new Boeing Dreamliner. One big plane.

We are working on Creation, an Epic Poem by Raymond Geraths, Nolan's late father. We have Redemption finished now. But Nolan wants Creation to take camping with him this weekend.

Tomorrow I am going to a Schwindt family reunion in Corvallis. Mainly there will be cousins from my Uncle Joe, my father's older brother, who died last year. There may be other Schwindt cousins there as I emailed many of them to tell them of my contacts with Schwindt family members in France, Argentina, and Germany.

I am making an apple crisp to take with me tomorrow.

I am so slowly reading Red Mars. I may not read the other two. Just not that interesting of a book. I have 3 more books waiting for me at the library, plus the six books I have here.

Looks like it will be nice this weekend.

I love neon. I wish I had this coffee cup in neon.

I downloaded to my Kindle, a sample of Lucy, a novel where a teenage girl is half human and half bonobo ape. These apes are so much like humans it is scary. I have this book reserved at the library but it may take some time to come in. If it is not in by the time I end the the Mars series, then I will get for my Kindle. Samples are free but only contain three chapters of the book. I read it this morning and it looks to be a great novel.

I am nearing the end of Red Mars. It is a good novel, science fiction in that they are on Mars, now for over 20 years.

I have six other books here to read so I better start reading for longer period of times to get through the Mars books.

I found out bees were making a nest at the end of the poles on our clothes line. I sprayed these hornets to end their stay there.

Hello:

Yet another picture made with cans. The cans will given to the local food bank when the art is taken down.

I edited the poem for one last time today. Tonight we will work on it together for one last edit with Nolan. Once it is finished I will put it on the Kindle page. I will take off the partial Redemption we put on there for free. We have not decided what to charge for this book yet. We will decide that tonight.

I am still reading Red Mars. It is a good book and a long book. I will finish it in a day or two, then onto Green Mars. Once I finish that book it will on to the last book in this series, Blue Mars.

Not much else happening here. Time to start dinner in a few minutes.

Not much happening here these days. Nice day outside at least.

Red Mars is a long book. I am more than half way through it after reading it for two days.

There was a story a few days ago from a study that reading a Kindle is slower than reading DTB (that is Dead Tree Book). Apparently I read 10% slower, which I dispute. I do believe I read faster on Kindle, but this is a personal observation.

If you are considering getting a Kindle, now is the time do it. You can get Kindle 2 refurbished, for $110. Just a few weeks ago this same one was selling for $259.00. Even though it was refurbished, Amazon guarantees this just like a new Kindle.

Also, the new Kindle DX, in slate gray, has been reduced to $359.00, reduced from $499.99. I plan on buying a Kindle DX soon. The DX is the larger one, much larger than the Kindle 1 and Kindle 2. I have a Kindle 1 and I am very happy with it and I have no plans to get a Kindle 2.

Hello again:

This picture is Hoover Dam. I have never seen it but the lake behind it is getting lower and lower. So low, you can see the Native American drawings on some the walls formerly covered by water.

I am reading Red Mars, and it is a good book. In the first chapter one of the main characters is killed. Now, half way through this book, it is the back story of the year-long trip to Mars and landing there, setting up house, and go about living there. The book is not up the first chapter yet.

I would call this book literary science fiction. The writer makes it with verisimilitude.

After this book comes Green Mars and the final book is Blue Mars.

I hope to read each book in two to three days.

I am making my own coffee each morning now. I grind my own beans and make my coffee in a French press. It tastes so very good made this way.

Good morning:

This is a new walkway at the Grand Canyon. It was not there when I was there a few years ago. I spent about a half an hour and then I left. Not much to see once you see it. You can look at a big ditch for only so long.

I did finish Last Call. It is an excellent book. If we can look to one event that changed peoples' minds was the inauguration of Herbert Hoover. In his speech he gave a detailed plan of enforcing Prohibition. That changed so many opinions. Of course, this country leaked liquor from every place. I read the Constitution last night to see the 18th Amendment and the 21st Amendment repealing it.


I am about a quarter through Red Mars. Not the science fiction I was expecting. More of a literary science fiction. I will keep reading it to see how it develops. It better turn into a good book as I have Green Mars and Blue Mars here to read next.

I was not feeling good here two nights ago. I had a bad stomach ache.

But last night I picked some fresh peas from my garden. I had them over my dumplings. We have here what I call "fried dumplings." You call them pot stickers, but to me they are simple fried dumplings.

I do wish we could get the dumplings like I get in China. That is my favorite food in China. My next favorite food in China is noodles. Rice comes a distant third.

Fried rice in China looks nothing like the fried rice here. In the U.S. I believe they use soy sauce when frying rice here. Not so in China. It has much more other stuff than you get in fried rice here.

I do like tofu in every form except fried smelly tofu. I like tofu in sauce, tofu skins, tofu in other foods.

Fresh peas today...

Hi again:

I am listening to 60's music on my TV. Station 803 plays Sonic TAP 60's Revolution. Music all of the time with no commercials. The music I grew up with.

I went to the library today to pick up 14 books there. But my next book is on my Kindle, Red Mars. I have Green Mars and Blue Mars here from the library so science fiction here I come.

I will finish Last Call today. Like I have been telling you this is a very interesting book, a history of Prohibition, its rise and its quick fall.

Now I am friends with other Schwindt family members from France and Germany plus a few more from Argentina. There is a new page on Facebook called Schwindt Cousins. I joined it and posted a picture of my grandparents that was taken in Argentina around 1905.

Much cooler today; not that I am complaining about the heat. After all the rain in May and June, we deserve some really hot weather now.

What is a parade without horses???? So here are some...

I am in the final chapters of Last Call, telling me how Prohibition ended. One of the people leading the charge for Repeal was William Stayton, an attorney. I hope to finish it today.

Redemption, an Epic Poem is almost ready for publication. Next week, after its seventh edit, will show up on the Kindle page. The poem is 40 pages long, typed out. On the Kindle it is 120 pages or somewhere in that range. I have it on my Kindle now to see how it looks.

It is suppose to be cooler today.

The picture is from the 4th of July parade we had here.

I failed to finish Last Call so I will try this weekend to get it done. It is such a good history of this country in the early 20th century. Like I said, this country leaked liquor during Prohibition. I am surprised how much liquor was here and available during Prohibition.

I want to finish this book so I can get into Red Mars on my Kindle. Green Mars and Blue Mars are waiting for me at the library. Science fiction for the next week or so.

Hot today...

Hi again:

It sure was hot today. I did two loads of laundry and afterwards I put the clothes outside. It only two hours to dry in the middle of the day in this weather.

I put my A/C in my room here today; it sure is nice.

I will be reading Last Call tonight, hopefully to finish it.

Made corn on the cob today. Sure was good. Two more ears for tomorrow night's dinner.

I made apple crisp a few days ago, but it is the frig now. I have a pie here to eat soon.

Hello:

When I was growing up I would see trucks with 3 logs going through Stayton almost every day. These days, 3 logs on a truck are a rarity; this is why see it only in a parade.

I failed to finish Last Call. I will try to do it today. I have 11 books waiting for me the library.

Do you believe that on Dec. 21, 2012 we will end? What a piece of garbage. I am watching a program on the SciFi channel on some real science fiction that we will end on 12/21/2012. I want to see what they crazies say on Dec. 22, 2012.

I am making iced coffee later this morning. I have fresh coffee made in the frig now; it was in the freezer for two hours to cool down. I made the iced coffee stronger than I usually make my daily coffee.

good morning on Hump Day

Hello:

This picture shows the crowd at the parade last Sunday on the 4th of July. It was a long parade, lasting almost on hour. But it was good. It had horses, some pretty women, old cars and floats carrying persons.

As I said, I still reading Last Call, all about Prohibition in the United States. Once it started, a year after the 18th Amendment was passed by the 36 states. After Prohibition started, the United States leaked.. liquor was coming from every where. Off the east coast, boats were anchored 4 miles out and sold liquor. Canada sent liquor from every state. On the west coast, in California, wine was good. If you wanted liquor after the Prohibition, you good get it. I am half way through this book.

It is getting hot this week, finally. We had to wait until July to get to 90 degrees, 32.2 C.

I will try to finish my book tonight or tomorrow night. Then on to science fiction for 3 books.

Monday morning

Good morning:

This picture is from the parade yesterday. People riding floats in the parade throw candy to the kids and sometimes others walk the parade giving out candy. I am sure not all parades do this but this a tradition in Stayton. Back when I was growing up here, we had the annual Bean Festival. We had a Bean Queen and her court. We also had a big carnival that stayed in town for three or four days.

I am in the part of the book Last Call where the 18th amendment has been passed by Congress and 300+ days later the requisite number of states ratified it. The amendment gave the U.S. a year to stop producing liquor. I just cannot imagine this happening. It was a different time. Now we shall see how America handles itself during Prohibition. I want to see how we came about repealing it.

My next book is changing: Red Mars, which is on my Kindle (probably a free book I got some time ago). It is the first book of a trilogy, Green Mars then Blue Mars. Three science fiction books. I love to read science fiction. Been some time since I have done so so now I will read three in a row.

I heard an interview with this author of this service on NPR last week. These three books are not his latest books but he did talk about the series on the radio.

I hope it does not rain today. I need to mow the lawn later today.

A very nice parade

Happy 4th:

This picture comes from the parade in Stayton today. This is along First Street in Stayton. The street was packed with people. My next few posts will have pictures from the parade.

In our parade the participants in the parade carry bags of candy that they throw to the children along the route. Safeway people came by before the parade passing out plastic bags for the children and mothers of smaller children.

I got a few pictures of children getting candy tossed to them.

I will not go to the fireworks tonight. Instead, I will stay in to continue to read my book, Last Call, all about Prohibition. I am surprised at the attitude of the country at the turn of the 20th century. Too many famous people came out for prohibition. Later in this book I am sure I will read about how the attitude change over time to end the ban on alcohol in this fair country.

4th of July

Happy 4th of July:

A nice day in store here in western Oregon. Good day for a parade later and fireworks tonight.

This picture is the drug-smuggling submarine the DEA seized in South America. This sub could care a ton of cocaine but they got it before it made it maiden voyage.

The Last Call is a very good history of the late 19th and early 20th century. The main group in charge of prohibition was the Anti-Salon League (ASL). Its director was a politically savvy person who realized his organization could not elect a person but could be make a difference in a close election. He got a lot of temperance people elected, with temperance meaning no drinks at all, not drinking in moderation.

Later this afternoon I will make some hamburgers for my 4th of July dinner.

Mid-day on Saturday

Hello again:

This picture is a pedestrian bridge in Singapore.

No luck with the strawberries yesterday. The season is over...much to my dismay. I so wanted to get some strawberries to make more shortcake. Too bad...

I am reading Last Call about Prohibition. I am surprised that Prohibition lead to suffrage for women. Some of the women involved in the late 19th century promoting no drinking at all lead to voting by women...ultimately. This book is really good. A good history of the late 19th century leading to the 18th amendment in 1919.

My father was born in 1922. So I doubt if he knows much about Prohibition.

I know my mother told me when she was growing up there was a still in the upstairs of the house she lived in with her mother. I see the house every time I go to Aumsville.

My mother was born in 1931 so she had no memories of prohibition. She died some years ago but I did talk with her about her home growing up and Prohibition.

I went to 3 garage sales today. Not much at any of them. Got two recipe books.

I found a recipe for 4th of July hamburgers. I will try to make them tomorrow. Adding an egg, oatmeal and other stuff to a burger is not something I usually do. We shall see what happens tomorrow when I do this.

Raining again....

Hello:

This picture shows the tallest building in the world, in Dubai.

It is raining out again...again....again.... Why so much rain. In June we had over 4 inches of rain, where the normal amount of rain for June is 1.5 inches. Now we shall see how much rain we get in July. In August our rain amount should be -0-.

I am almost finished with Rock Paper Tiger. I thought I would finish it yesterday. Today for sure.

As soon as I finish this posting I am heading out to see if the strawberry booth is open for its last day.

I have another book to read here about China: Poorly Made in China. As soon as I finish Last Call. I am waiting until next Tuesday to go the library to pick up the books waiting for me.

Hi again:

This picture is the Chunnel Tunnel between England and France. It goes under the English Channel for a good length of time.

I am meeting a high school classmate tonight. We have not seen each other for some years. It amazes me how we can make contact with old friends on Facebook.

I went to get some more strawberries today but the booth was closed. It may be open tomorrow, so I plan on getting there earlier than today. I got there today around 12:30 pm today. Tomorrow I will go there before 9:00 am. I want some more strawberries for shortcake.

I am drinking iced coffee now. I had hot coffee for breakfast, but this coffee I made yesterday and put in my frig. It tastes so different than hot coffee. An amazing softer taste even though I had to make the coffee much stronger than I when I make hot coffee.

My next book will be Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition. I read a book on Prohibition a few years ago, but the author of Last Call is someone I want to read so I will make my next book.

That was a big earthquake that killed over 100,00 people, mostly children in schools that collapsed. Every school, but one, collapsed. The one that did not collapse was overseen by the principal who made sure the contractors followed the plans to build the school.

I am still reading Rock Paper Tiger. It is a good novel. I will finish it later today.

What are your plans for the long weekend coming?

It will be nice over the 4th but by Tuesday it will be over 90 degrees. Finally getting hot here.
